Welcome to an exciting new feature here on the site. In what will be a fun and hopefully informative series, I’ll be interviewing fans, artists, and cosplayers who attend conventions. Those who have never been, those who will be attending their first one soon and those that are regulars. We’ll find out what it is about conventions they love so much and why they attend conventions in general. We’ll also find out cool things like how far they’re willing to travel, who and what they’re interested in seeing, what it’s like to be a part of a fandom and tips for other convention attendees!
So without further ado, here’s our first interview, with someone who has never been to a convention before and will be attending her first one this May!
Name, age, and location:
My name is Libra H. I am 34 years old, and I currently reside at Fort Bragg, NC
Which convention are you going to, and how far are you traveling?
I am going to Wizard World in Philly. I am flying from North Carolina, so it’s about 468 miles.
How did you hear about it?
I heard about conventions a few years ago from watching the tv show The Big Bang Theory. I didn’t know anyone who ever went to conventions until I became a fan of Sebastian Stan, and following him and fan pages on Instagram.
Are you going on your own, or are you going with friends?
Yes, I am actually going and meeting and staying with a friend I met via a Sebastian Stan and Don Saladino Page. We haven’t met in person, but we FaceTime all the time, and talk daily.
Will you be dressing up in costume? If so, what will you be wearing?
I am doing what I consider a small cosplay. I am not bold or confident enough to do a full on cosplay. I plan to do a Red Room Black Widow, so I’ll basically be a ballerina. I’m still debating on buying a red wig, dying my hair, or keeping it my natural color.
What are you most looking forward to doing or seeing?
What I am looking forward to the most is meeting Sebastian Stan. I am super nervous to meet him in person. I am also excited to meet all the friends I’ve made though fan pages of him. We plan to meet up and hang out. They are the people I talk to when my life gets too much, I can count on them and they just listen.
Will you be meeting any celebrities?
Yes, I am meeting Sebastian Stan. So far he is the only person I have plans to meet.
Will you be attending any panels?
This will be my first con, so I’ll be winging it with my friends. I am pretty sure we will be sitting in some panels.
Will you buy any merchandise, or anything from the artist?
I hope to buy merchandise! I really hope to find some comics or neat illustrations for my daughter. She’s 7, and recently picked up an interest in comics.
If you like your experience, will you attend more conventions in the future?
I absolutely hope to. Ideally I’d like to bring my husband and kids to the next one!
Do you read comic books, or graphic novels? If so, when and how did you become interested in comic books? Which was your favorite comic book/comic block character, and why?
Well honestly the first comic book type thing I ever read was Archie and Jughead. I picked that up as a young military brat living overseas in Japan. We didn’t have American tv, so reading was my escape. There was always that anticipation of reading what would happen next that excited me. After we moved back to the states I lost interest. I have now, however, picked up a few Winter Soldier comic books and have read them. So I am getting that interest back. And my favorite character is of course Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) from the Captain America series. He is my favorite because of his redemption. He starts out one way, but always loyal to his friend. Then is brainwashed and made into a killing machine that doesn’t know which way is up. He’s essentially lost. He doesn’t believe he deserves to be alive. He doesn’t believe he deserve happiness. He think everything bad that happens to him is deserve because of what he did as the Winter Soldier. Bucky Barnes is an anxious person, he suffers from PTSD, and he’s just trying to figure life out. I can relate to his complexity.
What is your favorite superhero/comic book movie?
My favorite comic movie is a tie between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. I really enjoy the fighting sequences in them.
What is your favorite tv show/s?
I love medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, The Resident. But I also really love The Big Bang Theory, Supernatural. They are the ones I follow.
Are you apart of any fandoms? If so, which ones? What’s the best thing about being apart of a fandom? And the worst?
I am, I guess you can say the Marvel Fandom, but more specifically Sebastian Stan. I am a part of the Supernatural Fandom too! And musically I am apart of the Shawn Mendes Fandom. Fandoms are great because you are always given updates on your “Stan”. Like new photos, and appearances. Which is pretty cool. The best part is making a true friend and getting to enjoy the person you love together and you don’t feel like a dork for being excited about something other people don’t understand, or care to be apart of. The worst has to be the rumor mills. It brings out the worst in them. But if you can avoid them and not feel the need to comment on them, it blows over and everything goes back.
If you were stranded on a desert island with 4 fictional characters, from any tv show or movie, who would you pick?
I’d pick Bucky Barnes, Iron Man, and Dean and Sam Winchester.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I’m looking forward to my first convention! And I will give you an update on how it goes.
